Christian On the Fence About Trump?

Consider Samson: The story of Samson is one of contradiction. God raised up Samson as a judge of Israel, but what kind of man was he? Endued with supernatural strength, but arrogant, self-willed, disrespectful to parents, a womanizer, but God used him to break the yoke of the Philistines. Samson allowed his lustful love for Delilah to be his downfall and yet in the end broke the power of the Philistines in a final act of revenge.

What has this to do with many Christians’ anti-Trump attitude? Well, God wanted Israel to return to him and raised up a man of great strength and cunning but who was a brash, arrogant, irreverent, womanizer. Not the pious, reverent, ever-forgiving, priestly type we think of as the person God uses to bring his people back into His bosom, the great statesman type able to overpower with rhetoric and reason and grace.

Does God want America to be the shining city on the hill of the world? The history of this nation, its founding, its growth, its rise to power, its effect on the standard of living of the entire world, the hate we have drawn over our concept of freedom, and our ofttimes lack of responsibility in sharing the blessings of that freedom shows a remarkable parallel to the history of Israel.

On June 28, 1787, in a plea to the delegates of a deadlocked Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin said, “The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: ‘that God governs in the affairs of men.’ And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?” I would add here that history proves beyond any doubt that no nation or empire can continue to stand without His aid.

God governs in the affairs of men. Donald Trump, this brash, often intemperate man with a less than stellar ‘Christian’ history has kept every campaign promise he has been able to keep. Our borders are being protected, everyone who wants a job can find one, the economy, trade, federal regulation, are all moving toward MAGA, Making America Great Again.

American History is not without stain! Many times our freedoms have been abused by those who have risen to power. Bigotry and racism are human weaknesses which are among the principalities and powers Christians are called to overcome, first within ourselves, then, as we are given voice and ability, within the world around us, our family, our circle of friends, our community and in the end our nation. There are those among us who would have us believe that the stains in our history define us. We cannot allow those people to have or maintain power! They are anathema to the American dream. I believe that it is overcoming those stains on America that define us.

If I was alone in this belief I could be dismissed out of hand. But I am not alone in it. Those who come to America seeking citizenship, take the classes, learn the language, yearn to take up freedom and the responsibility that goes along with it, those born here of American citizen parents and value freedom and the responsibility that goes along with it can Make America Great Again. But we must assume the responsibility to be informed voters who look to the preservation of our nation and not fall for for the short-sighted, destructive promises of those who would buy your vote.

Mr. Trump, for all his so-called failings and un-Christian history, has shown that he truly wants to bring back the America of the American dream. Is he perfect? Far from it! Was Samson? Not Hardly!! But God governs in the affairs of men. Perhaps we should not reject one who is doing his best to work for us, in search of some flawed, utopian ideal of perfect. If we do, I fear we will get exactly what we deserve. The idea of voting for the ‘lesser of two evils’ is a false paradigm! We are all sinners and therefore equal in the eyes of God.

Thank God He uses imperfect men to forward His perfect will! By their fruits you shall know them! Question: What are the fruits of the office of the President of the United States of America under Donald J. Trump. His whole life is not on trial. How he wields the awesome power of the office he holds is.
