In the Beginning…

Genesis 1

In the beginning

Beginning of what?  Time?  Creation?  History as it is revealed in Scripture? Did God create and then figure it out as it went along?  Was there a plan to have a beginning?  Or, was there a comprehensive plan for the Creation from beginning to Judgment?  God said only a fool begins building a tower without first counting the cost!

What was there before the beginning?  G-O-D!!! Not just any god, but God the Father of Jesus Christ.  And He had a plan!  He had counted the cost—every last penny!

In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.

This statement can also be understood to mean the entire period between speaking it into existence and the final Judgment.  Why?  Because the Creation is separate from eternity but has an eternal purpose.  Mankind was created  to have fellowship with God in His eternal realm.  Jesus is proof of that because He told us that where He went there we would be also.  It is revealed that He currently sits at the right hand of the Father!

And the earth was without form, and void;

Heaven was empty and the earth was without form (no living thing was upon the face of it) and void (barren, not Gaia, Mother Earth, but void, unable to produce any living thing of itself, powerless and inert), a blank canvas awaiting God’s next work.

And Darkness was upon the face of the deep.

Again this can be understood to comprehend the condition of the entire period from creation to Judgment.  Why?  Because Jesus came as the Light but the darkness comprehended it not.  We today are no different in our moral ability than were the Jews in Jesus’ day.  The darkness was not eliminated by the light neither was it allowed to dim the light.  God separated the light from the darkness.

And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Again this can be understood to state the work of God throughout the history of creation, beginning to end, as He works His plan for it to fruition.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

In Scripture, Light is used to mean understanding, truth, the Son Himself, as well as visible light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

The concept of holiness was introduced into the creation before any life was created.  God saw the light was good and separated it from the darkness.  The concept of morality, good set apart from evil is introduced.

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

The first day God decided good and evil were opposite as night and day, and as incompatible. But darkness is not removed from the creation because both light and darkness serve the purpose of God in the plan He uses the creation to fulfill!!

Please note that none of these expansions on the orthodox understanding of the above verses renders the orthodox to be in error, merely less than complete.  Not saying that these expansions are all that is possible or complete.  History and further study in light of history yet to unfold will be the judge.
